• in the early 1850s many people more people died than today because there were lower hygiene levels and people lived closer together
• Semmelweis came across the idea of cleanliness and washing your hands after handling a dead body, this drastically reduced deaths
• Semmelweiss found it difficult to share his ideas as he was very shy and people didnt believe him because bacteria could not be seen and there was no fast way to share his findings
• in the end, Semmelweiss suffered a nervous breakdown and was beaten and killed and died of sepsis
