  • "I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry." = shows scrooges cruelty by implying the poor can help being poor and they are just to lazy to do so. This is not the case because the poor can not physically help the fact they are poor because of people like scrooge. "Can't afford" shows scrooges frugality.
  • "Those who are badly off must go there" = scrooge thinks that there is no other solution to help the poor than putting them in workhouses
  • "They had better do it, and decrease the surplus population" = this shows that scrooge is cruel because he think that the world would be a better if the poor were not around when in reality its the wealthy.
