• Under Stalin, censorship increaed. By 1932 all literary groups were closed down and anyone wanting to write had to join the Union of Soviet Writers
• During the first congress of the group in 1934, it was announced that members had to produce aterial under the banner of 'socialist realism'
• A high degree of censorship continued throughout and after the Second World War
