  • implementing the organisations codes of practice:
    • requires registered care services to ensure they have enough appropriately qualified staff to meet the needs of all service users
    • provide or support training and professional developement
    • social care settings- new staff must are required to complete an induction programme + meet requirements of the common Induction Standards (2010), within 12 weeks of starting new job
    • manager must ensure new staff understand how to implement the codes of practice in their workplace + meet the current national occupational standards(NOS) for their role
  • meeting national occupational standards:
    • NOS describe best practice
    • should be met in the workplace
    • underpin the codes of practice in care settings
    • the curriculum for training of practitioners
    • covers standards included in the codes of practices for professional bodies e.g. NMC
  • undertaking continuing professional development:
    • must continually update skills, to maintain the high standards required in the sector
    • ensure they follow the best practice + most up-to-date procedures, based on recent research
    • all members of the GMC, NMC and HCPC must complete regular professional training to remain on their registers.
    • care managers are responsible to ensure support staff, that are not members of professional organisations, regularly update and extend their skills
  • supporting and safeguarding employees in health & social care:
    • internal + external complaints
    • whistleblowing
    • following protocols of regulatory bodies
    • membership of trade unions/professional associations
  • internal + external complaints:
    • HSC settings required by regulators to have formal procedures to address complaints.
    • poor practice allegations made against staff - addressed by internal disciplinary systems.
    • more serious allegations - addressed by regulatory bodies.
    • extreme allegations e.g. death by negligence - addressed by police.
  • following protocols of regulatory bodies:
    • provide protection for employees by ensuring the standards expected are clear and transparent
    • part of induction and ongoing training staff must fully undertsand their responsibilites and protocols
