Yugoslavia

• was established in 1920 as a result of the treaty of St Germain \
• in 1945 v new elections were held the outcome was the installation of a communist government led by Marshall Tito
• Tito objected to stalinist communism particularly the overcentralisation of government
• tito was aware under russian influence Yugoslavias freedom to trade with whoever they wished would be reduced
• russia withdrew economic support as Stalins hope was it would result in a rapid decline in the living standards of Yugoslavs who would then blame tito which would make it easy for Stalin to step in and restore order
• tito maintained his stance and continued to govern according to his own brand of communism
• Yugoslavias economic relations with the west were strengthened and they even managed to gain financial aid for the International Monetary Fund which reassured the people that tito was the right person to govern
• tito established communes which were popular with the Yugoslavs but no the Russians as it was in stark contrast to Stalins policy of centralisation
• relations between Yugoslavia and russia remained hostile until Stalin died
