  • Political radicalism was the the growth of ideas and support for those ideas to change/limit the traditional powers of the institutions of government
  • In 1640’s some MP’s became more radicalised by events at the time and Charles’ reaction to them. Some people in country particularly London became more radicalised
  • The reaction of London became very significant as the political crisis developed. Known as the London Crowd or the Mob. Many Londoners participated in politics regardless of class
  • London as a City supported Parliament. Radicalism grew in response to Laudianism like the 15 000 signed Root and Branch petition – Dec 1640
  • London crowd was prepared to riot or mobilise to protest to further Parliament’s cause like after Protestation oath – church rails pulled down
  • Made Charles feel unsafe particularly for Queen. Use of Common Council enabled Pym to have control of London
  • Political radicalism grew in the House of Commons
  • In November 1640 the Commons united by desire to dismantle Personal Rule
  • Pym used the events of Spring 1641 to drive the Commons into further action like The Army Plot of April 1641 Protestation Oath Triennial Act and Impeachment of Strafford
