Ch5: Circulatory System

Cards (3)

  • Blood cells:
Red blood cells - contains haemoglobin, carries oxygen
White blood cells - Destroys bacteria by eating it, produces antibodies which attack bacteria
Platelet - Clots blood when a vessel is torn/damaged
  • Blood vessels:
Artery - Has thick walls, carries blood away from the heart
Vein - Has thin walls, carries blood toward the heart, has valves to prevent blood flowing backward
Capillary - One cell thick/Very thin walls, allows substances to pass into cells
  • The Heart:
Vena Cava - carries blood from body to heart
Right atrium - Receives deoxygenated blood from vena cava
Right ventricle - transfers blood from right atrium to pulmonary artery
Pulmonary artery - carries blood from right ventricle to lungs (for oxygen)
Pulmonary vein - carries blood from lungs to left atrium
Left atrium - receives oxygenated blood from pulmonary vein
Left ventricle - transfers blood from left atrium to aorta
Aorta - sends blood throughout the body
