The mole

Cards (7)

  • Mole
An amount of a substance that contains an Avogadro number of particles (6.02 x 10^23)
  • The Avogadro constant is 6.02 x 10^23
  • One mole of any substance
Contains an Avogadro number of particles (atoms, molecules, ions or electrons)
  • The mass of one mole of any substance is exactly the same number of grams as the relative atomic mass (A) or relative formula mass (M) of the element or compound
  • Examples of mole masses
    • 1 mole of carbon = 12 g
    • 1 mole of N2 = 28 g
    • 1 mole of CO2 = 44 g
  • Formula to find number of moles
Number of moles = mass in g / M (of the element or compound)
  • Steps to balance equations using moles

    Write balanced symbol equation
    1. Use mole ratios from equation to calculate amounts of each substance
    2. Multiply all numbers in equation by a common factor to get whole number mole values
