Sign Test

  • Step 1: Subtract IV 2 from IV 1 to get a sign of difference (if the number is positive, this is represented by a +, if the number is negative, this is represented by a -)
  • Step 2: Add up the amount of pluses and minuses
  • Step 3: The number of the less frequent sign is the S value (also known as the calculated value)
    • For example, 7 minuses and 5 pluses means the S value is 5
  • Sign test is used for :
    1. Testing difference (experiments)
    2. Uses nominal data
    3. When the experimenter uses Repeated Measures design
  • If there are any equals signs, ignore these
    • Take the amount of equals signs away from the number of participants, they are irrelevant
