    • tougher penalties popular with the public and therefore they offered support
    • prison has 2 functions: incapacitation - criminals are in able of harming public, deterrence - criminals think twice before offending.
    • Conservatives brought in Crime Act, which introduced mandatory minimum sentences for repeat offender such as automatic life sentences for a second serious sexual or violent offence
    • Tony Blair’s New Labour Government cam to power Promising ‘tough on crime’ and ’tough on the causes of crime’, introduced measures such as ASBOs and curfews.
  • CCTV
    • prison guards can observe inmates without the prisoners knowing whether they were being watched
    • Foucault argues that this leads prisoners to monitor and regulate their own behaviour
