Group 0

Cards (5)

  • Group 0
    The noble gases
  • The noble gases are electronically stable due to their full outer shells.
  • Their full outer shells make them inert (highly unreactive) and they exist as monatomic (single atom) gases
  • Group 0 trends

    • Noble gases all have low boiling points
    • As you go down group 0 the boiling points increase
  • Why are noble gases inert?

When elements react, their atoms complete outer shells by losing, gaining, or sharing electrons. Atoms of group 0 elements already have stable arrangements of electrons (a full outer shell). This means that they have no tendency to lose, gain or share electrons. This is why the noble gases are unreactive. It is also why atoms of group 0 elements do not share electrons to form molecules.
