  • How powerful are the supernatural in the play ‘Macbeth’? (30 + 4 marks)
Whilst the supernatural are clearly a malevolent, powerful force in the play, Shakespeare ultimately contrast the evil of the witches with the real evil of Macbeth’s ambition, tyranny, and cruelty. Macbeth’s evil goes beyond what can be attributed to the witches. Consequently, Shakespeare seems to be highlighting the need to respect the natural order to ultimately support King James I as the legitimate king.
