  • The etiology of Bell’s palsy is unknown, but it may be caused by viruses such as herpes.
  • In Bell's palsy there is temporary facial paresis on the cranial nerve VII which is inflamed
  • Symptoms of Bell's Palsy peak in 48-72 hours
  • Symptoms of Bell's palsy include ptosis, dry eyes, facial drooping, problems with eating and swallowing
  • Interprofessional Care
    • Oral corticosteroids within 72 hours
    • Eye protection (dark glasses, artificial tears due to dry eyes), and eye shield at night
    • Protect face from cold to avoid trigeminal hyperesthesia
  • Recovery is possible
