  • Why was the Missouri compromise made
    by 1819 US made up of 22 states, half free and half slavery. In November 1819 Missouri requested to be a state, which allowed slavery. North wanted to block the spread of slavery and concerned South would have a political advantage. South thoight new states should have slavery if they chose to. it took until March 1820 for a compromise to be reached

    Missouri was a slave stare but another state (Maine) was admitted as a free state. in the new eastern territories slavery was not allowed above the north of the latitude 36°30’ north

    Uncle Toms cabin (1853) and described how slaves were treated. Many people on the north were shocked and many joined or supported abolitionist groups.

    After the 1846 war with Mexico bases areas of land were handed to the USA. I’m 1849 California applied for admission as a free state however fell in the middle of the 36°30’ north line.

    California became a free state. The new lands taken from Mexico were organised as ‘territories‘ - not yet states. a new fugitive slave law (giving enslaved people who had escaped to Northern free states back to the South) was made. This made the South happy

  • On 20th December 1860 a special meeting called a convention was held in South Carolina. By a unanimous vote, the members of the convention decided that South Carolina should leave, or secedefrom the United States.
    In January and February 1861, six more southern states also seceded from the Union

    situated on an island off the coast from the city of Charleston, South Carolina. South Carolina was one of the states that had seceded and formed the Confederate

    The Fort however was occupied by troops loyal to the United States. The Fort was running low on supplies so Lincoln ordered supplies to be sent by sea.
    On the 12th April Confederate troops opened fire on the Fort. The following day, Fort Sumter surrendered. The Civil War had begun.

    farmers from south moved to Texas because land was cheaper. They brought slaves which was banned by Mexico in 1829 which angered farmers. Farmers rebelled against Mexico and made Texas and independent republic in 1836. Texas joined the USA in 1845 as 28th state. Mexican troops attacked US troops in Texas, starting a war.
