Cards (8)

  • Electrolysis: the breaking down of a molten/dissolved compound by passing an electric current through it.
  • Oxidation Is Loss (OIL).
Negative ions (-) are attracted to the positive anode(+) where they lose electrons (oxidised).
  • Reduction Is Gain (of electrons) (RIG)
Positive ions (+) are attracted to the negative (-) cathode where they gain electrons (reduced).
  • Electroplating is used to make objects look more attractive or protect them against corrosion.
  • Test for hydrogen: place a lit splint in the gas and it will burn with a pop
  • Test for oxygen: place a glowing splint in the test tube and if oxygen is present it will glow.
  • The electrode that attracts the positive ion is called the anode.
  • The electrode that attracts the negative ion is called the cathode.
