Electrolysis: the breaking down of a
molten
/dissolved compound by passing an
electric current
through it.
Oxidation
Is Loss (OIL).
Negative ions (-) are attracted to the
positive
anode(+) where they
lose
electrons (oxidised).
Reduction
Is Gain (of electrons) (RIG)
Positive
ions (+) are attracted to the negative (-) cathode where they gain electrons (
reduced
).
Electroplating is used to make objects look more attractive or protect them against corrosion.
Test for
hydrogen
: place a
lit splint
in the gas and it will burn with a pop
Test for
oxygen
: place a glowing splint in the test tube and if
oxygen
is present it will glow.
The electrode that attracts the
positive
ion is called the
anode.
The electrode that attracts the
negative
ion is called the
cathode.
