• When atoms gain or lose electrons, charged particles called ions are formed
• If a atom gains an electron it becomes a negatively charged ion
• If an atom looses an electron it becomes a positively charged ion
• By forming ions, atoms achieve the same electron arrangement as the nearest Nobel Gas
