The Pacific

• Keen to capitalise on its alliance with Britain, Japan declared war on Germany on 23rd August 1914 and on Austria-Hungary on 25th August
• The war was extended to the Pacific when Japan seized German possessions in the Far East
• By September 1914 New Zealand had occupied German Samoa
