Types of Policy

• What is formal policy making?

  • governmental policies and laws that goes through parliament
  • crime control policies: laws designed to reduce crime
  • state punishment policy: sanctions laid down by the law that can be imposed on those convicted of a crime
• What is informal policy making?

  • policy created by less authoritative figures
  • aren't enforced nationally, rely on social institutions to promote lawful behaviour
  • family rules: curfew, grounding etc.
  • community meetings: neighbourhood watch
