(digestive) enzymes

Cards (8)

  • carbohydrates are broken down by carbohydrase enzymes. Carbohydrase breaks down starch and turns it into glucose so it can be carried into the blood and be used in respiration or to be stored in the liver as glycogen.
  • protein is broken down by protease to then be turned into amino acids which are then used to make proteins.
  • lipid is are broken down by lipase into glycerol and fatty acids and are used for energy
  • enzymes are biological catalysts made up of amino acids
  • enzymes react best at an optimum temperature. this is where the rate of reaction is at its fastest
  • if the temperature is greater than the optimum the enzyme will become denatured
  • when an enzyme becomes denatured the active sites shape changes
  • if the active sites shape changes the substrate wont fit and a reaction wont occur so no product will be produced
