Cards (9)

  • what is health?
good health - state of complete physical, social and mental well being
  • how do communicable and non-communicable diseases differ?

communicable: caused by pathogens, can be passed from an infected person to other people.
non-communicable: not passed from person to person, caused by a problem in the body or fault in the genes, or result of how we live our lives/ lifestyle
  • why can having one disease increase the chance of getting another disease?some diseases may be correlated possible causes of these correlations:
    • one disease damages immune system - easier for other pathogens to cause disease
    • disease damages bodys natural barriers, allows pathogens easy access to body
    • disease stops organ system working effectively - other diseases likely to occur
  • use own words to define good health: good health is the ability to function well in all aspects of life
  • what is meant by a correlation between two factors?
    a link between two things
  • microorganisms that cause disease are called pathogens
  • describe the difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases use an example of each in your description

The main difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases lies in how they are transmitted and their underlying causes. Communicable diseases are infectious and can be passed from person to person, like influenza. while non-communicable diseases are not contagious and develop due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors, like type 2 diabetes.
  • suggest why somebody infected with the hiv virus is more likely than people without the virus to get other communicable diseases
hiv weakens the immune system which makes it easier for other pathogens to get into / cause disease
  • suggest why where you live might effect how long you live for.
you could live in somewhere where pollution or CO2 levels are high. inhaling this over an extended period of time could increase your chance of contracting something like lung cancer, or asthma which lowers life expectancy
