Plain seams
Most commonly used seam. Can be finished
neatly
with a range of
methods.
Double stitched seam
The same as a plain seam, but with an additional row of stitching, usually with a
5mm
gap. Makes the seam
stronger.
French
Seam
An enclosed
seam
that hides any edges. Suitable for sheer fabrics like chiffon. The seam is almost invisible.
Flat stitched seam
A very strong enclosed seam. Two rows of stitches strengthen the seams. The
stitching
on the top is often a different colour of
thread.
Lapped
Seam
Seams created by
overlapping
one layer on top of another before
stitching
through the layers.
Clipping seam
Particularly with
woven
fabrics, sometimes seams need to be clipped to allow the fabric to lie
flat.
Finishing seams
To neaten a seam and prevent freying.
OVERLOCKING.
