  • Plain seams
Most commonly used seam. Can be finished neatly with a range of methods.
  • Double stitched seam
The same as a plain seam, but with an additional row of stitching, usually with a 5mm gap. Makes the seam stronger.
  • French Seam

An enclosed seam that hides any edges. Suitable for sheer fabrics like chiffon. The seam is almost invisible.
  • Flat stitched seam
A very strong enclosed seam. Two rows of stitches strengthen the seams. The stitching on the top is often a different colour of thread.
  • Lapped Seam

Seams created by overlapping one layer on top of another before stitching through the layers.
  • Clipping seam
Particularly with woven fabrics, sometimes seams need to be clipped to allow the fabric to lie flat.
