Social Learning Approach

Cards (5)

  • Modelling and imitation in the context of health -> parents/ carers are role models, demonstrating (modelling) health-related behaviours for children. Children observe behaviours (e.g. brushing teeth) and imitate them (also modelling).
  • Vicarious reinforcement in the context of health -> observing a model's behaviour being rewarded makes imitation more likely (e.g. enjoying exercise).
  • Effects of peer role models -> modelling of peer behaviour is more likely because we identify with them (similarity). Peers establish social norms of a group, e.g. desirable to smoke or exercise.
  • Evaluation of social learning approach to health (positives) -> practical uses, support for effectiveness.
  • Evaluation of social learning approach to health (negatives) -> issues with health education role models, some role models lead to unhealthy lifestyles.
