  • What are norms?
    Norms are shared rules and expectations guiding behaviour in a society or group, maintaining social order, defining cultural values and shaping interactions.
  • What are the 4 types of social norms?
    Folkways
    Mores
    Taboos
    Laws.
  • What are values?
    Values are beliefs that we have about what is important, both to us and to society as a whole. A value is a belief (right or wrong) about how something should be.
  • Examples of values are:
    Honesty
    Respect
    Responsibility
    Fairness
    Kindness
  • What are Moral codes?
    Moral codes dictate the rules or norms within a group or society for what is ‘proper’ behaviour.
    They are shared behavioural patterns.
    There are some timeless moral codes which are also cross cultural.
    Moral codes exert control over actions of member of that society or group and compliance/ adherence is almost involuntary.
  • The terms culture refers to the whole way of life of a particular society. It can involve values, norms, customs and beliefs.
  • Values refer to the ideas and beliefs that are worth striving/ trying for. So for example, striving to the best at what you do is a value.
  • Norms are what we consider appropriate social behaviour in certain settings. Norms are enforced by sanctions; positive and negative.
  • There are many social structure parts that make up society. One example of a social structure in society is the education system.
  • Sociologists also study social processes, things that make society as it is. This is things like that way we are brought up.
  • Deviance is behaviour that differs from the norm, behaviour that is unusual.
  • What are the 3 diff ways behaviour could be deviant?
    1-Behaviour that is unusual but good (risking your life to save someone else)
    2-Behaviour that is unusual and eccentric (talking to a tree)
    3-Behaviour that is unusual and bad (attacking someone for no reason)
