    1. In 1927 the Party was advocating voluntary collectivisation
    2. By 1928, food shortages caused Stalin to make the Great Turn
    3. The Ural-Siberian method (forcible requisitioning of peasants' grain) was used as a temporary measure
    4. In late 1929 Stalin announced the liquidation of the kulaks (richer peasants)
    5. Party officials went to villages to try to persuade the peasants to enter the collectives voluntarily
    6. Once enough peasants had signed up the collectives would seize the land, animals and grain of the kulaks
    7. The government had to force the peasants into collectives using the Twenty-five Thousanders
    8. In March 1930 Stalin wrote 'Dizzy with Success' blaming over-zealous party officials
    9. Once that year's crop was harvested, collectivisation was enforced once more, with the concession of allowing small private plots
