Metals and Non-Metals

Cards (5)

  • Metals properties:
    • Lose electrons and form positive ions.
    • High melting and boiling points.
    • Good electrical and thermal conductors.
    • A basic oxide - means that when combined with water a base is given off.
    • Shiny.
    • Malleable.
    • Sonorous.
  • Reactivity of metals:
    • More reactive towards the bottom of the group
    • More reactive when they lose electrons more easily
  • Non-metals properties:
    • Gain electrons to from negative ions.
    • Low melting and boiling points.
    • Poor conductors of electricity and thermal energy.
    • Low density.
    • Acidic oxide - means when combined with water an acid is given off.
    • Brittle.
    • Dull.
  • Transition metal properties:
    • Form many different ions
    • Form colourful compounds
    • Good catalysts
  • Non-metal and non-metal forms a molecular compound.
