God as the Omnipotent Creator

Cards (5)

  • For most people, to say that God is the only God must mean that He is omnipotent, he has created everything and is the controller of all things. Since God is the only God, he cannot be challenged by any other authority. Matthew 19:26 '...with God all things are possible'
  • God's omnipotence can be defined in different ways

For some, it means God can do absolutely possible including the logically impossible. For others, God can do anything that is 'logically possible'. This solves the problem of evil as it is not possible for humans to have free-will and there not to be evil in the world. However, Process Theologians deny God's omnipotence in any sense as the existence of evil shows God can't be all-powerful
  • Most Christians argue that if God is omnipotent then He must be the creator of everything that exists
  • There is also a disagreement on the method of God's creation
Ex Deo - 'Out of God's own being' - most reject this idea as it means that God and his creation are the same thing, whereas many Christians believe God is Transcendent and the 'Wholly Other'
Ex Nihilo - Most Christians believe that God created the universe 'from nothing'
Creation from chaotic matter - Some Christians believe that God created the universe from pre-existing chaotic matter which He put into ordered state. (Process Theodicy)
  • Creation from pre-existing chaotic matter is the method of creation most likely to be true as Genesis could have been mistranslated - The Enuma Elis is the Babylonian account of creation, which supports the idea of creation from chaotic matter. However, this doesn't show that creation out of nothing is false
