researched how cultural capital (cultural knowledge that helps someone navigate a culture) affects opportunities
Pierre Bordieu - Formal Curricula
Upper and middle class have more cultural capital than lower class. Because of this, dominant values are rewarded in the educational system eg through teaching and tests. Other students struggle to identify with values outside their social class.
Hidden Curriculum
Nonacademic knowledge learnt through informal learning and the passing on of culture in schools eg dress well and be on time. This reinforces the position of those with cultural capital as they are "in the know" already.
Setting/streaming
Sorting children based on academic ability makes inequality even worse. Can lead to self fulfilling prophecies.
Lauren and Tyson - Training
Schools train the working class to accept and retain their position in society. Lauren and Tyson argue this is fulfilled by students from wealthier areas being able to access more resources that help them in school than working class.
