freud's view of personality Individual diff develop

Cards (2)

  • According to Freud, childhood experiences throughout the development of the personality can lead to individual differences in adult personality e.g., an overdeveloped ID can lead to a very selfish and demanding personality whereas an overdeveloped superego leads to an adult personality which is overly moralistic and judgmental (might see themselves as a failure as they are unable to live up to their own standards).
  • Therefore, if someone has an overdeveloped ID, this may lead to aggression due to an overwhelming desire to fulfil their needs immediately meaning that they may be aggressive to get what they want. On the other hand, someone with an overdeveloped superego could lead to a person being aggressive because they are able to justify the behaviour to themselves as moral or just.
