agarose gel electrophoresis

Cards (3)

  • Biotechnology

The artificial tools and techniques used on organisms or the products of organisms to make a product or solve a problem for human benefit
  • Gel Electrophoresis

A technique that can seperate large charged molecules, usually DNA or proteins according to size and c charge so they can be visualised and identified bty comparison with a standard
  • Steps of Electrophoreses
    1. set up gel in apparatus, make wells with a comb, and pour buffer over to regulate pH and provide a medium
    2. cut DNA fragments with restriction enzymes, dye with a fluorescent chemical such as ethidium bromide and pipette, along with a DNA ladder into the wells of the agar
    3. turn on the current, and the negative fragments will begin to move towards the positive electrode. smaller fragments move further and larger molecules move not so far. they form bands, which can be compared
