The belief that Jesus is the Son of God

Cards (8)

  • Mainstream Christianity accept the Trinitarian doctrine and hold that Jesus was literally the 'Son of God'
  • Liberal Christians often interpret the title to mean that Jesus was simply 'a son of God' that is an exceptional/Godly man
  • John 10:30 - "I and the Father are one'. This is what Jesus told the Jews. This is the claim that Jesus and God are one. This could also be interpreted as Jesus claiming to be God. Jesus responds to this by saying that he does his Father's work and the title 'Son of God' just means he is simply doing the work God wanted him to do. Translation makes it difficult to understand what Jesus really meant
  • The Corinthian society would mainly have been Polytheistic (acknowledging many gods), but Paul reminds them that is only one God and that God is the creator of all.
  • Some say that Paul claims Jesus is God. To support Paul's view the Sherma can be referenced 'Hear O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one' (Deuteronomy 6:4)
  • Others say that the Greek word for lord can mean different things like 'Sir' (Matthew 27:63) or 'husband' (1 Peter 3:6). This means that it does not necessarily have to mean Lord.
  • The majority of Jesus' followers were convinced that Jesus was God in human form
  • The Nicene Creed presented by the Church says that Jesus is the Son of God
