Woody friendship montage

Cards (16)

  • These two scenes are complete binary oppositions to one another, highlighting the drastic change Combo's indoctrination has caused Shawn.
  • The prior scene to the montage shows the gang as a collective, loving group - Shane had them bond before filming and uses a loose script allowing an authentic sense of friendship to flow.
  • Woodie is established as the donor (propp) in the MS's as he gifts Shawn a Ben Sherman shirt (symbolic + semantic code of the skinheads).
  • In terms of Voglers narrative theory, the hero (Shawn) has met his mentor (Woodie) and the montage establishes Shawn's new equilibrium with friends.
  • A L-cut begins with the Toots and Maytals motif 'Louie Louie', adding to the skinhead aesthetic as Shane visualises the skinheads he shows as 'a snapshot of an era... about sticking up for mates and beliefs'
  • The editing creates a satisfying, uplifting watching experience as the beats are synchronised to the jump cutting stills of graffiti, one reading 'skins'
  • The long crowd shot of the boys in slow motion is a symbol of the boys' collective identity whist having individualist elements to them: Woody stood in the middle but slightly behind the gang represents his supportive leadership in a dispatcher way that sets the boys up for life.
  • Woody is like a father figure to Shawn.
  • Chris Wyatt dissolves into LS slow motion mirroring the boys with the girls: representing a gender equality in this gang that is stripped in Combos gang (being only five boys)
  • The equality is furthered by hand held camera CU's of the gang playing football, this close camera work involving the audience in the gang: as those they are playing with them.
  • Costuming: Smell shows elements of the new romantic style, showing the diversity of the skinhead subculture that accepts other sub cultures.
  • Costuming: women and men dress the same: ben shermans, docs, suspenders, and shaved hair (lol)
  • Zoomed in MS of Shaun in slow motion getting slapped around the head – sign of friendship for men, despite being an action of violence this shot is heart-warming as it shows Shaun has become part of a gang.
Innocent violence that is later developed into extreme violence.
  • Shanes use of slow motion represents the youthful innocence, the slowest part of life where you get to fill your time hanging out with friends, being silly and innocent.
  • Shane uses montage as a narrative technique to advance the plot in a short amount of time.
  • Ending the montage on a slow motion LS trucking shot of the gang builds a heartwarming sense of belonging for Shawn, showcasing the skinhead culture as inclusive and a celebration of diversity.
