Brain localisation

Cards (7)

  • Localisation of function is the idea that certain functions have certain locations within the brain
Based on this theory, if a certain area of the brain is damaged the function associated with that area will also be affected
  • The motor area is located in the frontal lobe and is responsible for voluntary movement by sending signals to the muscles in the body.
    Both left and right hemisphere
  • The somatosensory area is located in the parietal lobe and revives incoming sensory information from the skin to produce sensations related to pressure, pain and temperature. Different parts of the somatosensory area receive messages from different locations of he body
    Both left and right hemisphere
  • The auditory area is located in the temporal lobe and is responsible for analysing and processing acoustic information. The auditory area contains different parts, and the primary auditory area is involved processing simple features of sound including loudness, tempo and pitch
    Both left and right hemisphere
  • Broca area is named after Paul broca, patient tan could only say the word tan. Post modern examination showed lesion on left frontal lobe which is responsible for speech production
    Left hemisphere
  • At the back of the brain, in the occipital lobe is the visual area, which receives and processes visual information. The visual area contains different parts, that process different types on information including colour, shape and movement
    Both left and right hemisphere
  • Wernicke area named after carl wernicke, patients could talk but not understand language, lesion to left temporal lobe responsible for language comprehension
    Left hemisphere
