Mitigation + Adapting of climate change

Cards (9)

  • Mitigation - preventing the effects of climate change by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
  • Adaptation - learning to live with the effects of climate change, such as flooding, droughts and extreme temperatures
  • Mitigation - Alternative energy
    Example: solar, wind, hydro-electric
This reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. This means that less greenhouse gases are trapping sunrays so the earth isn't heating up
Adv. - Cheap to run, renewable
Disadv. - Expensive to make, not reliable
  • Mitigation - Carbon capture
This catches the CO2 when it is emitted, turns to liquid then puts it into the ground
    Adv. - very successful
Disadv. - Very expensive, we don't know the effect
  • Mitigation - Planting trees
Trees absorb CO2 through the process of photosynthesis
    Adv. - natural
Disadv. - we are still cutting down trees
  • Mitigation - International agreements
Example: Kyto Protocol, 170 countries reduced CO2 emissions by 5.2%
    Adv. - Global, cheap
    Disadv. - Not law
  • Adapting - changing agricultural systems
Example: South of the UK can grow olives. Gambia has drought resistant crops
Farmers is LIC's can still get their income from increasing temperatures
Adv. - Places like UK can grow Mediterranean plants like olives
    Disadv. - Costly
  • Adapting - Managing water supply
Example: Makueni- small dirt dams. Built water tanks ontop of a school
    Water can stored and managed
Adv. - Supplies water to LIC's
Disadv. - Not using the aid appropriately
  • Adapting - Reducing the risk of rising sea levels
Example: Maldives are building houses on stilts
Reduces the risk of homes flooding and being destroyed
Adv. - Marketing of going on stilts brings in tourists
Disadv. - Having to move people out, will be expensive
