Psych origins

Cards (6)

  • Wundt (1832-1920) - used introspection, pioneered empirical research and use of scientific method in lab in Leipzig
    • Allowed psychology to veer off philosophical origin and become a more proper science
    • Methods unreliable (focus on unobservable processes, memory and perception ect)
  • Introspection not overly accurate (Nisbett and Wilson 1977 claim we have little knowledge of most underlying psychological processes)
    • Scientific method in psychology allows replication, objectivity, ect - improves theories in general
    • Scientific approach not always reliable, many things unobservable
    • Introspection still used/seen as important today (made happiness a measurable phenomenon Csikzentmihalyi and Hunter 2003)
