  • breathing - the process the respiratory system uses to move air in and out of your lungs
  • function of respiratory system - supplying your blood with oxygen and removing the CO2 from your blood and returning it to the outside air
  • inhaling - your diaphragm muscles contract, pulling ribs up and diaphragm down.
    • this increases the size of your chest and lungs
    • pulls air into lungs
  • exhaling - diaphragm muscles relax, pulling diaphragm up and ribs down
    • forces air out
    • decreases chest size
  • bronchi - two branches that connect to either lung. tube - like passages
  • cells need oxygen to release energy from nutrients
  • bronchi - bronchioles - alveoli
  • alveoli - made of epithelial tissue ( same as capillaries )
    • the air in the alveoli has a high concentration of oxygen while the capillaries have less oxygen
    • oxygen diffuses into the blood, carbon diffuses out back into the lungs
  • respiratory system
    A) bronchi
    B) bronchioles
    C) lung
    D) diaphragm
    E) trachea
  • bronchitis -
    • Mucus builds up in bronchi and causes them to become narrower
    • Emphysema - Disease that causes damage to lung tissue, causing shortness of breath
  • Lung Cancer - Tumor or cancerous growth forms in the lungs; takes up space and impairs lung functioning
