1. If pathogen gets past physical & chemical barriers (e.g. skin & stomach acid) and enters blood, white blood cells are second defence line
2. Phagocytes are macrophages (white blood cell type), found in blood, tissues
3. Phagocytosis is non specific response (not specific to antigen) - same response triggered for any non-self cell (e.g. pathogen)
4. Phagocytes are attracted to toxins/chemicals released by pathogens & move towards them
5. Receptor binding points on phagocyte surface attach to antigens on pathogen
6. Phagocyte changes shape to engulf pathogen, which is now contained in phagosome vesicle
7. Lysosome fuses w phagosome, releases contents
8. Lysozyme enzyme released & hydrolyses/destroys pathogen
9. Soluble products absorbed & used by phagocyte
10. Antigen placed on cell surface membrane (becomes antigen presenting cell)
