  • Biodiversity is the general term used to describe variety in the living world. It is composed of three different types of diversity - species diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem diversity.
  • Species diversity refers to the number of different species and the number of individuals of each species within any one community.
  • Genetic diversity refers to the variety of genes possessed by individuals that make up a population of a species.
  • Ecosystem diversity refers to the range of different habitats in the living world.
  • Species richness is the number of different species in a particular area in a given time (community). This can be used to measure species diversity.
  • The diversity index can also be used to measure species diversity.
