    • recerchier
old french word, to search and search again
    • Research
A scientific approach of answering a research question, solving a problem, or generating new knowledge through a systematic and orderly collection, organization
    • Research
      • Also an academic study that uses very technical terms to represent its parts
    • Data Collection
      Observing, measuring, and recording information
    • Data Analysis
Arranging and organizing collected data to find out their significance and generalize about them
    • Report Writing
An inseparable part and an outcome of a research study. Its purpose is to convey information contained in it to the readers
    • Descriptive Research
Finds answers to who, what, when, where, and how. Describes a given situation in terms of specified factors
    • Correlational Research
Answers the questions why and how. Investigates relationships between factors and variables
    • Experimental Research
Studies the "cause and effect" relationship between certain factors on a certain phenomenon under controlled conditions
    • Quantitative Research
Emphasizes objective measurements and statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys
    • Qualitative Research
Focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and conversational communication. About what people think and why they think so
    • Qualitative Observation vs Quantitative Research
Qualitative Observation uses the five senses to describe results, while Quantitative Observation is made with instruments and is measurable
    • Research Problem
Anything that gives a person a feeling of discomfort, needs to be changed, or is not working as expected. Must be relevant, feasible, clear, and ethical
    • Research Framework
Explains the existence of a problem and the connections between variables in the research
    • Research Objectives
Give focus to the study and specify variables that are going to be measured
    • Variables
Basic elements measured in the study. Observable and measurable. Four kinds: independent, dependent, intervening, and antecedent
    • Hypothesis
A scientific guess that tentatively answers research questions. Two types: null hypothesis (no relation) and alternative hypothesis (relationship between variables)
    • Review of Related Literature (RRL)
Collected information related to the research problem and related concepts theories
    • Research Design
Plan course of action followed to answer research questions or solve research problems
    • Research Statistics
Science of collecting, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting data
    • Population
Entire pool from which a statistical sample is drawn. May refer to an entire group of people, objects, events, or measurements
    • Sample
Smaller, manageable version of a larger group used in statistical testing
    • Probability Sampling
Sampling technique where a researcher sets selection criteria and chooses members of a population randomly
    • Non-Probability Sampling
Researcher chooses members for research at random without a fixed or predefined selection process
    • Data
Information collected, printed, or recorded for the purpose of analysis
    • Research Question
Provides a focus for investigation, determines the method of study, and guides all stages of inquiry, analysis, and reporting
    • Creswell 2008: 'Steps in doing a simple research'
    • Fraencal & Wallen 1996: 'Three general types of research'
