Finlay et al (2006)

Cards (9)

  • Casino design 1: Kranes (1995)

    Playground Layout Model.
    - Suggested that casino should be simple and easy to understand, with space having pleasing and familiar elements, having e.g., sunlight, greenspace and moving water (inducing feelings of freedom and security).
  • Casino design 2: Friedman (2000)

    Twist and Turn Layout Model.
    - Suggested that machines should be the dominant feature of the decor and that other designs should be limited to highlight the machines.
    - e.g., ceiling should be low (to draw attention to machines), areas should be made of small pathways (reducing legibility and coherence.
  • Experimental design
    Quasi-experimental design.
  • How was DV operationalised?
Measures of emotional reactions to casinos were collected from people who gambled in 6 casinos.
  • Sample
    48 individuals.
  • Sampling technique
    Volunteer (from Las Vegas, Nevada).
  • Recruitment process
    - 2-3 participants paired with one researcher, group went on to visit 4 casinos.
    - Process was replicated for each of 4 researchers, so all 16 casinos rated by at least 3 individuals.
  • Results
    - Kranes-type casinos yielded significantly higher ratings than Friedman-type casinos on pleasure and restoration.
  • Conclusion
    - Future research should focus on design variations that can be built into a Friedman-type setting to enhance restoration.
