Strong and Weak acids

Cards (7)

  • Strong acid
Acid molecule fully ionizes in aqueous solution, releasing hydrogen ions (H+)
  • Weak acid
Acid molecule only partially ionizes in aqueous solution, releasing some hydrogen ions (H+)
  • Strong acids
Have a lower pH than weak acids for a given concentration
  • As the pH scale decreases by 1 unit, the concentration of hydrogen ions increases by 10 times (1 order of magnitude)
  • As the pH scale decreases by 3 units, the concentration of hydrogen ions increases by 100 times (2 orders of magnitude)
  • Dilute acid
Has fewer acid molecules in a given volume than a concentrated acid, even if the strength is the same
  • Concentrated acid
Has more acid molecules in a given volume than a dilute acid, even if the strength is the same
