Structure of the cell-surface membrane

• The cell-surface membrane controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell.
• Most molecules cannot freely diffuse across the cell-surface membrane because they are not lipid-soluble, too large to pass through the membrane channels, of the same charge as the protein channels (so are repelled), or are polar (charged) molecules.
