Magnetism

  • Describe the properties of magnets in terms of attraction and repulsion
Magnets have two key properties: attraction and repulsion. They attract materials like iron, nickel, and cobalt, pulling them closer. Similarly, magnets repel other magnets when like poles are brought together, pushing them away.
  • Know that Iron, cobalt, steel and nickel are all magnetic materials that are attracted to magnets.
Iron, cobalt, steel, and nickel are magnetic materials. They're attracted to magnets because their atomic structure allows them to align with the magnetic field, resulting in attraction.
  • I can recognise and reproduce the magnetic field pattern of a bar magnet.

  • Know how an electromagnetic works and how its strength can be increased
An electromagnet works by passing an electric current through a coil of wire, creating a magnetic field. Its strength can be increased by increasing the number of coils, using a stronger electric current, or using a core material like iron within the coil.
