  • what is the purpose of protecting intellectual property? (IP)

    to ensure that a persons creative ideas are not exploited and used by others without compensating the creator/author of the work
  • define copyright and what it is marked by?
    Marked by the copyright C symbol and is a form of legal protection for the creative work of authors and typically lasts around 70 years after the authors death in the UK
  • what is the trademark symbol?

    TM and is used with a recognisable logo or name
  • What to patents apply more to?
    Inventions and hardware and software features
  • what must you do if you want to use published copyright material?
    1, obtain written permission from the owner of the IP or pay fees or have licenses
    2, consider whether its use could be seen as fair dealing (used for education, research or news reporting)
    3, substitute the work and have other alternatives that have a creative commons license
    4, include the use of watermarks, symbols and attributions which credits the original author (only with some cases and permissions)
  • what does copyright apply to?
    Anything published online or offline eg
    photos, images, graphics, music, sounds, books, magazines, movies, videos and software
  • what type of software does not use copyright?
    freeware
  • what is creative commons?
    A license arrangement that the creator chooses that lets you use that person's work
  • what are the different types of CC licenses?
    CC BY and CC BY NC
  • what is CC BY?
    CC BY can be used freely as long as you quote the source
  • what is CC BY NC?
    can only be used for non commercial purposes so you cannot profit from its use but you must still quote the source
