Exposes a person to altered strain of the virus - doesn't get you sick
Immune system creates antibodies and then memory immune cells for the virus
Next time the virus is present in the body, it can recognize the virus (protein coat) and disable it so that it can't infect host cells
Prevents getting sick from the same virus again (there are exceptions)
