  • How do appeals work in the civil courts?
Appeals can reverse the decision, remove or confirm compensation or increase/ decrease compensation. But appeals must be lodged within 21 days of the hearing. In County court small claims tried by District judges have appeals heard by a Circuit judge in County Court. However if a small claim was tried by a Circuit judge, as many personal injury cases might be as they can be more complex, appeals are heard by a High Court judge in the High court.
  • How do appeals work in the higher courts?
Typically an appeal moves up the hierarchy of the courts so from County, to High, to the Court of Appeal then to the Supreme court. However, if a point of law is at stake county court cases can leapfrog straight up to the Court of Appeal, where they have to pay the increased costs and get lawyers. The Supreme Court deals with points of law of general public importance.
