Translation

Cards (2)

  • Translation steps
    1. mRNA binds to a ribosome (exposing 3 codons within the ribosome)
    2. 2 Specific tRNA with a specific amino acid attached -binds anticodon to codon by specific complimentary base pairing
    3. Peptide bonds form between the 2 amino acids
    4. 1st tRNA released and can now pick up another specific amino acid. Ribosome moves along 1 codon
    5. Next 2 amino acids form peptide bonds etc, ribosome moves along, tRNA released, polypeptide chain grows
    6. Ribosome reaches end and releases mRNA and polypeptide
  • Summary of translation
    1. mRNA attaches to ribosome
    2. tRNA carries specific amino acid (to ribosome)
    3. tRNA anticodons bind to complementary mRNA codon
    4. Amino acids join by peptide bonds (formation of peptide bonds requires ATP)
    5. tRNA released (after amino acid joined to polypeptide)
    6. The ribosome moves along the mRNA to form the polypeptide
