  • Id - pleasure principle

    Unconscious part of the mind present at birth. Focuses on self and expects immediate gratification. If too overpowering, it can produce a selfish personality. The id's focus on immediate gratification
  • Superego - morality principle 

    Forms between 3-6 years. Arises through identification with same-sex parent. Internalised sense of right and wrong (conscience) based on parental values. If too overpowering, it can produce an anxious personality or feelings of guilt.

    Rational and conscious part of the mind that forms from 18 months and 3 years. Balances the demands to reduce conflict between id and superego using defence mechanisms. The ego's use of defence mechanisms to balance the demands of the id and superego
