Gender and subject choice

• Boys traditional do computer science and physics
• Girls typically do English, sociology and arts
• The National Curriculum (1998) means all boys and girls do the same subjects
• When students are given the choice about what subjects they do, there is still a division in gender
• AS and A Levels, boys tend to choose natural science (maths/physics)
• AS and A Levels, girls tend to choose english and sociology
• Vocational courses are work related courses
• Boys choose vocational courses of a masculine career, such as engineering
• Girls choose vocational courses of a feminine career, such as childcare
