  "The conch doesn't count on top of the mountain, so you shut up."

  "How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?"

  "I thought I might kill"
• Ralph

  "The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever expect to be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep a fire going?"

  "Life is scientific, that's what it is. In a year or two when the war's over they'll be traveling to Mars and back."
• Jack

  "Bollocks to the rules! We're strong- we hunt! If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down! We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--"
• Ralph

  "If I blow the conch and they don't come back; then we've had it. We shan't keep the fire going. We'll be like animals. We'll never be rescued"
• Piggy

  "I been in bed so much. I done some thinking. I know about people. I know about me. And him. He can't hurt you; but if you stand out of the wayhe'd hurt the next thing. And that's me"

  "All the same. You'll get back all right. I think so, anyway."

  " He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a prefect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk-"

  "This head is for the beast. It's a gift"

  "Me and my hunters, we're living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun"
