Biological Hazards and Disasters

Cards (8)

  • Fish kill - is a common occurrence in the Philippines. Fish dies
because of many reasons such as starvation, stress, diseases,
    parasites, overpopulation, severe weather, etc.
  • Red Tide - A hazard related to fish kill and refers to the rapid increase of algae
    in coastal waters.
The algal bloom causes the water to have red color, although the
water may also have an orange, greenish, or milky color
depending on the organisms involved in the phenomenon.
These algae release toxins that contaminate the shellfish along
    the coastal area.
People should also be made aware of the Red Tide Advisory
released by the government and refrain from eating shellfish.
  • Livestock Epidemics - A disaster can happen among livestock if the animals contract
viruses and diseases resulting in an epidemic outbreak
  • Insect infestation
A pervasive influx of insects or parasites that affect human,
    animals, crops, and other goods.
  • Endemic disease - constantly present in a certain population or religion with relatively low spread
  • epidemic disease - where there's a sudden increase in cases spreading through a large population like country
  • pandemic disease - when there is a sudden increase in cases spreading through several countries, continents, or the whole world.
  • Algal bloom - causes the water to have red color
